La Ofrenda
2018 — postcard
This one-of-a-kind postcard was created for the exhibition titled Correspondencia/Correspondence, held by two Puerto Rican galleries, Taller Malaquita and El Lobi. It was an open call to all artists, with the intention of uniting the local and international creative community through a show of support for the country after hurricane Maria. Every artist was required to physically mail a postcard to the gallery in order to participate.
La Ofrenda, which translates to "The Offering", pays tribute to the Puerto Rican custom in which the host of the house offers coffee to his visitors. This practice is seen as a cordial, while also serving as an invitation to take a break from your day, slow down and just talk. Living away from the island I've grown nostalgic of this practice and found that it is much more than just sharing coffee with a peer. It is a small gesture that unites people in a way, offering a breather in these difficult times where a sense of community is much needed.
